Vibrant Planet and the Alchemy of Ashes

At its core, Vibrant Planet uses cloud-based, data-driven mapping and AI technology to take the guesswork out of land management. It can look at a landscape and tell a forestry group, a utility company, an insurance firm, or a municipality exactly where to thin unnaturally overgrown forests, how to do it, and how to maximize their budget to prevent a catastrophic wildfire. It takes the abstract concept of climate resilience and turns it into a practical, block-and-tackle strategy through good forestry management.

We look at a dense, choked wall of green and mistake it for vibrant health. But beneath that crowded canopy, many of these woodlands are being ravaged by over-populated deer herds, meaning there is no secondary forest—no diverse understory—growing up behind the old trees. A truly healthy forest is a managed forest. And as counterintuitive as it sounds to a culture taught to leave nature entirely alone, one of the best, most restorative things we can do for the longevity of our planet is to actually cut down trees at times.

But the trillion-dollar question is always: where? Which trees do you take to save the ecosystem, and which do you leave?

Open Road’s Impact

In December, Mitch Rubin at Elemental Impact was kind enough to connect me with one of their partners, an organization called Vibrant Planet. I have a soft spot for investors who genuinely look out for their investees—the dot-connectors who don’t just move capital, but weave a safety net. Open Road operates on that exact belief: that timely, strategic support at the right moment can prevent a crisis from becoming a catastrophe.

It has been an honor to support Allison and the Vibrant Planet team through Open Road climate lending team.
